Dear Neta Volunteers

It seems that everywhere you turn someone is talking about “going green.”  You hear it in political debates, read about it in newspapers and magazines, and see stories about it on the news.  Even The Boy Scouts of America’s own magazine Boy’s Life recently devoted an entire issue to being green, and will continue presenting information about this topic until December.

A challenge was even presented to all Boy’s Life readers to go green.  The magazine even promised to present articles on project ideas that can help with an individual “going green.”  Being green is defined as being concerned with the protection of the environment (dictionary.com).

Interestingly, being green is always something that the Scouting movement has promoted.  Throughout all of the Scout handbooks, youth are encouraged to leave every setting the same or better than it was before they arrived.  Clearly, this sentiment easily extends beyond a camping setting, and it enters into one’s personal, professional, and community life.  The Scouting Movement works to make our lives less harmful, less damaging, in short:  better.

Your unit’s summertime activities serve as an excellent opportunity to promote the “green” way of life.  By having the boys at outdoor programs, their appreciation of nature will grow.

This summer is full of great activities for your scouts, from Day-Camp, Webelos Resident Camp, 7-Ranges Summer Camp, Ox Roast, First Play, Scout Night at Progressive Field among several others.

Enjoy,

Kevin H. Barnett

Go for the Gold at the 2008 Netawotwes Day Camp

This year the Netawotwes Day Camp will be taking our Cub Scouts to the Gold.  BB Guns, Archery, Sling Shots and Sports are just a few of the activities our Cub Olympians will be participating in.  This fantastic summer event will take place at Camp Tuscazoar from June 23rd through June 27th.  If you have any questions contact Day Camp Coach Sandy Honaker at 330 897 6291.

Arrgh!  Pirates of Akela

Searching for treasure, slushies, archery, swimming, fishing, among countless other activities will have your Webelo Pirates ready to set sail on the high seas.  This fun-filled Three Day and Two Night adventure will be Arrgh-uably one of the coolest experiences for your Webelos.  Visit www.buckeyecouncil.org for all of the camping options and to find out more information.  If 75% of your pack’s scouts attend WRC or Day Camp (based on your unit’s recharter) the Cubmaster will receive an embroidered polo shirt.

Scout Night at Trumpet in the Land

On Saturday August 23rd scouts in uniform will receive a special 1 night only discount on tickets to the spectacular outdoor drama "Trumpet in the Land."  Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green, this story details the first settlement in Ohio:  Schoenbrunn.  The performance will begin at 8:30.  If you would like more information please contact Kevin Barnett at 330 364 4223 or visit www.trumpetintheland.com.

Congratulations April Scout of the Month:  Riley Cook

Riley Cook from Troop 86, chartered through St. John’s United Church of Christ was recently announced as the April Scout of the Month.  Riley, an avid reader of political and historical books, spends his free time entertaining the crowds as a member of the Dover High School “Tornado” Drumline.  He is also active with the St. Johns United Church of Christ youth group.  During Riley’s time as a Cub Scout he earned his Arrow of Light, the highest award earned by a Cub Scout.   As a Boy Scout, Riley has attended the National Jamboree, and hopes to, once again, attend the Jamboree before his 18th birthday.  He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow and a 4th year Pipestone holder.  Riley is a Life Scout, and is currently working towards his Eagle Scout Rank.
