Dear Neta Volunteers
It seems that everywhere
you turn someone is talking about “going green.” You hear it in political
debates, read about it in newspapers and magazines, and see stories about it
on the news. Even The Boy Scouts of America’s own magazine Boy’s Life
recently devoted an entire issue to being green, and will continue
presenting information about this topic until December.
A challenge was even
presented to all Boy’s Life readers to go green. The magazine even
promised to present articles on project ideas that can help with an
individual “going green.” Being green is defined as being concerned with
the protection of the environment (dictionary.com).
Interestingly, being green
is always something that the Scouting movement has promoted. Throughout all
of the Scout handbooks, youth are encouraged to leave every setting the same
or better than it was before they arrived. Clearly, this sentiment easily
extends beyond a camping setting, and it enters into one’s personal,
professional, and community life. The Scouting Movement works to make our
lives less harmful, less damaging, in short: better.
Your unit’s summertime
activities serve as an excellent opportunity to promote the “green” way of
life. By having the boys at outdoor programs, their appreciation of nature
will grow.
This summer is full of
great activities for your scouts, from Day-Camp, Webelos Resident Camp,
7-Ranges Summer Camp, Ox Roast, First Play, Scout Night at Progressive Field
among several others.
Enjoy,
