This merit badge can provide a thorough introduction to those who are new to the bow and arrow—but even for the experienced archer, earning the badge can help to increase the understanding and appreciation of archery. Astronomy MB (2:20)

Audience: Youth

In learning about astronomy, Scouts study how activities in space affect our own planet and bear witness to the wonders of the night sky: the nebulae, or giant clouds of gas and dust where new stars are born; old stars dying and exploding; meteor showers and shooting stars; the moon, planets, and a dazzling array of stars.

Basketry MB (9:00, 10:00, or 2:20)

Audience: Youth

Basketry is a handy skill for a Scout. A basket can be a sturdy companion on campouts, carrying clothes snugly and efficiently, holding potatoes and corn for roasting over a campfire, or carrying the day's fishing catch back to camp for dinner. Baskets and basket-weaving projects also make great gifts for family and friends. Kits ranging from $7.00 to $9.00 are available at the Trading Post.

Bird Study MB (9:00)

Audience: Youth

Birds are among the most fascinating creatures on Earth. Many are beautifully colored. Others are accomplished singers. Many of the most important discoveries about birds and how they live have been made by amateur birders. In pursuing this hobby, a Scout might someday make a valuable contribution to our understanding of the natural world.

Bugling MB (By Appointment)

Audience: Youth

One of the original 57 merit badges issued by the Boy Scouts of America in 1911, Bugling was nearly phased out in 2010. It has remained, however, due to an outcry of support for this lost but important art. The Support Services Department offers Bugling by appointment. Candidates for this merit badge should meet with the announced Counselor early in the week to ensure completion.

Camping MB (9:00 or 2:20)

Audience: Youth

Camping is one of the best-known methods of the Scouting movement. When he founded the Scouting movement in the early 1900s, Robert Baden-Powell encouraged every Scout to learn the art of living out-of-doors. He believed a young person able to take care of himself while camping would have the confidence to meet life's other challenges, too.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites

4b Help a Scout patrol or Webelos Scout unit in your area prepare for an actual campout, including creating the duty roster, menu planning, equipment needs, general planning, and setting up camp.
The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from a unit leader verifying his service.
8c Prepare a camp menu. Explain how the menu would differ from a menu for a backpacking or float trip. Give recipes and make a food list for your patrol. Plan two breakfasts, three lunches, and two suppers. Discuss how to protect your food against bad weather, animals, and contamination.
The Scout needs to: Bring menu and food list to camp. Write a short report about how the menu would differ from a menu for a backpacking or float trip
8d Cook at least one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner for your patrol from the meals you have planned for requirement 8c. At least one of those meals must be a trail meal requiring the sue of a lightweight stove.
The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from a unit leader verifying completion of the requirement.
9a Camp a total of at least 20 days and nights. Sleep each night under the sky or in a tent you have pitched. The 20 days and 20 nights must be at a designated Scouting activity or event. You may use a week of long-term camp toward this requirement. If the camp provides a tent that has already been pitched, you need not pitch your own tent.
The Scout needs to: Bring a signed letter from a unit leader verifying completion of the requirement.
9b On any of these camping experiences, you must do TWO of the following, only with proper preparation and under qualified supervision:
  1. Hike up a mountain, gaining at least 1,000 vertical feet.
  2. Backpack, snowshoe, or cross-country ski for at least 4 miles.
  3. Take a bike trip of at least 15 miles or at least four hours.
  4. Take a non-motorized trip on the water of at least four hours or 5 miles.
  5. Plan and carry out an overnight snow camping experience.
  6. Rappel down a rappel rout of 30 feet or more.
The Scouts need to: Bring a signed letter from a unit leader verifying completion of the requirement.
5 Do the following: 5 (e) Present yourself to your Scoutmaster with your pack for inspection. Be correctly clothed and equipped for an overnight campout.
