BUCKEYE COUNCIL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE ON SCOUTING

Diocesan  & Council Chairperson: Leo Koller

2510 10th St NW

Canton, Ohio    44708

It is with great pleasure that we announce the formation of the Buckeye Council Catholic Committee on Scouting. Buckeye Council covers a large territory reaching into five different Dioceses. This can make for a communications nightmare. The Dioceses and related Districts are as follows:

Diocese of Youngstown: Seneca, Westark , Wapakonachee and Sandy Beaver-Ohio.

Diocese of Wheeling: Sandy Beaver- West Virginia.

Diocese of Cleveland: Northern Killbuck - Wayne County.

Diocese of Columbus: Southern Killbuck - Holmes County, Western Netawotwes.- Tuscawaras County.

Diocese of Steubenville: Eastern Netawotwes - Carroll County.

Initial goals of the Catholic Committee on Scouting are

ü       To have Committee Member(s) from each District also sit on their respective Diocesan Committee on Scouting acting as a liaison between the two Committees.

ü       To provide a better flow of information between the Diocese, Council, District and units on events, classes, training sessions, etc.

We hope to provide information on:

Ø       The Religious Emblems Award Programs.

Ø       Chaplain Aide Training Programs.

Ø       Council and Diocesan camp outs and retreats that have religious themes.

Ø       Diocesan related community service projects and missions.

Ø       National Catholic Committee on Scouting activities and events at places like Philmont, National Catholic Youth Convention, etc.

If you know of or have any events or classes scheduled through the Diocese of Youngstown or one of the other associated Dioceses’, please contact    Jennifer McNeely @ 330-580-4272 x 140, so we can publish your information.

Have you heard about what is going on in our Scouting program??

PRAY, the provider of the God and ME Series, reported that the Buckeye Council had a 30% increase in the number of scouts receiving religious awards. We are now 7th in the Country!!

The National Catholic Committee on Scouting presented the Quality  Diocese Award for the year 2006 to the Youngstown Diocese.

On April 22, at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown many scouts and adults received their religious medals. Along with that we are pleased that two of our units were given the Pope Paul VI awards: St. Paul Catholic Church in North Canton and St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Canton. Congratulations to all who worked to receive their religious awards!!

Scoutmasters,

If your Troop is charted to a Catholic Church or Knights of Columbus and you have a Scout earning his Eagle, he is entitled to receive the National Catholic Committee on Scouting's and the Knight's of Columbus's Certificate of Recognition. The Scout does not have to be Catholic to receive this award, just a member of a Catholic Scouting unit.
For Troops not chartered by a Catholic church or organization, if you have a Catholic Scout earning his Eagle, he is also entitled to the National Catholic Committee on Scouting's and the Knight's of Columbus Certificate of Recognition. Please forward the name of the Scout and Unit number to:
Eric Prather at ericprather@sbcglobal.net or (330) 854-6443 or (330) 705-4883.

For Catholic units, if you have adults very involved with your troop program, that you would like to give a special thanks to, Catholic or non-Catholic, you can nominate them for the Bronze Pelican or St Georges awards. Deadline for award nominations is October 31st.

Please contact Leo Koller at (330) 455-1600 with Adult nominations.
